Abstract

1,068,778. Pneumatic Separating. AMBUCO Ltd. April 22, 1966 [April 27, 1965], No. 17723/65. Heading B2H. An air classifier comprises a chamber 10 having at its top an exhaust duct 16 across which extends a cascade of spaced vanes 15 and a lateral inlet 13 via which particulate material in an air stream is delivered into the chamber 10 in a direction transversely to the vanes 15 whereby a major portion of the air stream is abruptly deflected into the duct 16 causing entrainment of the lighter particles through the duct. The heavier particles continue in a minor portion of the air stream towards a concave lateral wall 12 of the chamber or fall under gravity towards a grid-like floor 17 which provides access to the closed interior of a hopper 18. The wall 12 causes a circulation of the minor portion of the air stream so that heavier particles in that. portion of the air stream are frictionally more retarded than the lighter particles by contact with the wall 12 and any heavy particles falling towards the floor 17 is scrubbed by the circulating air and the circulation-borne particles so that adhering lighter particles are detached from them. The chamber 10 has a second concave wall 11 facing the wall 12. Secondary air may be introduced through a conduit 22, 19 and directed along the floor 17 in order to assist the circulation in the chamber. In order to vary the sizes of particles being separated, the secondary air volume may be varied by a butterfly valve 20 in the conduit 22 and its velocity may be varied by increasing or decreasing the cross-section of the conduit 19 by means of a pivotable flap portion 23. The vanes 15 are pivotable so that their angle of incidence to the incoming air may be altered according to the nature of the material to be classified.
