Abstract

1,067,456. Knotting. W. REINERS. Sept. 3, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962; Jan. 25, 1963], No. 34766/ 63. Heading D1C. [Also in Division G1] A thread knotting device for producing a fisherman's knot has means to monitor the correct position of thread ends to be tied by ascertaining the number of thread ends inserted into the knotting device by measuring the thread dimensions. In one embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the monitoring device comprises two condensers in a bridge circuit and one thread end is located between the plates of each condenser, the birdge being unbalanced if one thread end is missing or if two are present between the plates of one condenser. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) light from a single bulb is shone with equal intensity in two directions perpendicular to the thread axis and is received by two photocells. If one thread is present the cut-off of light is the same in both directions and the bridge is balanced but if two threads are present uneven cut-off results with corresponding unbalance of the bridge. In a modification Fig. 8 a double thread F, F 2 is measured by the use of three photo-cells 31, 32 and 37 which are connected to produce two bridge circuits. A voltage drop is produced on the resistance 40 corresponding to the diameter of the narrow side of the two threads and a voltage drop is produced on the resistance 42 corresponding to the difference in diameter of the wide and narrow sides. The voltage on resistance 40 is amplified and passed via a resistance 44 to an amplifier 45. The voltage on resistance 42 is also passed to the amplifier 45. When the voltage on the resistance 42 exceeds the threshold voltage of the amplifier 45 delivered by the amplifier 43 the thread cutter magnet 20 is energised. To prevent crossing point and prevents the occurance of double thread can be drawn over a straight edge by a conical roller which eliminates the crossing point and prevents the occurance of others (Figs. 9 and 10 not shown).
