FEDOR BENEDIK. J
, Imam/e7 the Patented Feb. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2,460,672 THIMBLE-NEEDLE THREADER. Fedor Benedik, New York, N. Y. Application May 9, 1947, Serial No. 746,942
4 Claims.
This invention relates to thi-mbles as common- 1y used as sewing aids and has for its main objectto provide means whereby a sewing needle may be threaded easily.
It has been experienced especially by persons with bad sight that the threading of a sewing needle is diflicult and in some cases almost impossible, Various devices have been invented to fill the need for a help in needle-threading. However two disadvantages are common to all of them: (1) The necessity for buying a device specially for this purpose; (2) to search for it when needed. Generally it is not readily found and the needle is threaded, without help and with dimculty. After a certain time interest is lost in the new device which is soon forgotten and together with other novelties finds its permanent place at the bottom of some drawer.
To this problem my device offers a solutionof the utmost simplicity, in combining a thimble with facilities for needle threading. The thimble is conventionally worn on the finger when sewing is in progress-no search for it is necessary when a needle has to be threaded and no mechanism has to be operated.
With the above object in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be described more fully hereinafter. I I
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 are perspective views of the complete device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevationalview of my device.
Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 are fragmentary sectional elevational views of my device showing alternative constructions. v
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevational view of a further alternative construction.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the thimble-needle threader consists of a hollow body I having on its outer surface cup shaped depressions 2 into which the end of'the needle is periodically placed when sewing, The thimbleneedle threader is closed at its top end by an optically magnifying lens 3 which may be fitted to the body l in various ways, as for example, by shaping the top end of the body I into a rim 4 against which the lens 3 is fitted from the inside and is secured there by a ring 5 which is spot welded to the inside of body I as shown in Fig.
. into it that small humps I are formed on the inside which secure the underside of lens 3, see Fig. 4. A further method of securing the lens to the body is to fit the lens into a groove situated in top end of the envelope, as shown'in Fig. 5. Fig. 6 shows an example where the whole device is made of one piece. The material forv this construction is transparent plastic which is particularly suitable for this purpose, as an eflicient lens can be shaped and a rigid monolithic construction can be attained.
The body I is provided with one or more slots 9 into which is inserted and friotionally held there a sewing needle 10 as shown in Fig. 1. If the needles head II is observed thro the lens- 3 it will be understood that the threading of the needle with thread I! can be accomplished easily.
To accommodate needles of diiferent diameters, several slots of different width may be cut into the envelope (see Fig. 2), each-slot being equally wide over its whole length, or preferably wider at its open end and narrower at its closed end. If so tapered a single slot may be found suflicient to accommodate most needles.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawing comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my me vention and that the various changes in the constructionmay be made within the scope of the appended claims; without-sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
1. A needle threader comprising a hollow body in the form of a thimble and having an enclosed top end..said body being formed with a slot in the side thereof for frictionally engaging a needle inserted therein and so that the head of said needle may be viewed by looking through said top end in the direction of the hollow of said body, said top end comprising an optically magnifying lens whereby the head of said needle may be observed in a magnified state so that the threading thereof may be facilitated.
2. A device according to claim 1 and wherein said slot is open at the bottom end of said body, said slot being tapered toward said top end so as to accommodate different widths of needles.
3. A device according to claim 1 and including a plurality of slots formed along the length of said body and radially spaced thereabout.
4. A device according to claim 3 and wherein each of said'slots is open at the bottom end of said body and tapers toward said top end, each of said slots being of a different width relative to any other slot.
