[Also in Division E2] A vehicle seat has a back-rest with side members 2 pivotally mounted in members 1 forming the connection between the seat and back rest. The back-rest can be adjusted from a normal sitting position to a rest position and thence to a lying position. Cams 3 interconnected by a rotatable spindle 4 are rotatable in members 1 and controlled by a knob 5. Each cam co-operates with a cam track 6 rigidly secured to each side member 2. A toothed segment 9 is pivotally mounted on cam 3. A recess 9a is formed in segment 9 for engagement by stop 7 rigidly connected to cam 3. A toothed segment 11 meshes with toothed segment 9. A pin 12 having two flats 12a, 12b is rigidly secured to segment 11. A half-moon shaped disc 8 is rotatably mounted on cam surface 6 of side member 2. A spring 15 suspended from side member 2 is rotatably secured by a connecting strip 16 to spindle 4 and exerts a contact pressure on disc 8 so that radial forces acting on cam 3 always pass through its axis of rotation 4. To adjust the back-rest the spindle 4 is turned in a clockwise direction to turn the cams 3 in the same sense and thus effect a clockwise pivotal movement of the back-rest. Stop 7 engages in recess 9a at the rest position of the back-rest, Fig. 3 (not shown). Further rotation of cam 3 will effect a positive connection between the cam and toothed segment 9 and a consequent rotation of toothed segment 11 in a counterclockwise direction until flats 12a, 12b lie in the longitudinal direction of slot 13. This will enable the back-rest to be lowered to a lying position. A spring 10 acting on the toothed segment 9 is tensioned when the back-rest is in the lying position. When the back-rest is returned to the rest position the tension in spring 10 is relaxed and toothed segment 11 is returned to its locking position.
