Abstract

1,064,750. Boots &c. ROSEMOUNT ENGINEERING CO. Dec. 23, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 50766/63. Heading A3B. A boot e.g. a ski boot or skating boot consists of an outer shell of rigid material having an opening permitting foot access to the interior of said boot which is covered by a flap member held in place by releasable clamps, and means within the outer shell for holding the foot firmly in the outer shell. The outer shell may be made of fibre-glass or a light metal e.g. aluminium. The shell may consist of a main portion 42 and may have a flap 43 which is pivoted to the shell at 45 and is held in position by clamps 46. Alternatively the flap may be formed at the heel of the boot or at the side of the boot; or the boot may be formed in two halves pivoted together about a horizontal axis, the dividing line being transverse or lengthwise of the boot. The edge of the flap may interlock with the edge of the shell (Fig. 14, not shown). In order to hold the foot firmly within the boot the shell may be provided with a lining and the space between the lining and the shell filled with a liquid which will harden after it has been put in place. Alternatively the space between the lining may be filled with padding which is forced into contact with the foot by an insole which is raised by wedges in the sole of the boot or the lining may be forced into contact with foot by spring loaded plates. In a further embodiment a lining may be tightened over the foot by cords attached to the bottom of the lining and which are tensioned by lacing, springs or an inflatable bag. In order to allow the ankle to flex the boot may be provided with a rigid ankle piece which is connected to the shell by flexible washers or a flexible gasket which allows tilting movement of the ankle piece relative to the shell. Alternatively the front of the boot may be cut away to form a V-shaped recess and the recess filled with a flexible sleeve which also encircles the ankle, or a flexible anklet may be attached to the top of the boot. Alternatively the clamps holding the flap member may be spring loaded to allow limited flexing of the ankle.
