Abstract

Artificial leather and shaped articles comprise a non-woven fibrous mat, the fibres of which are constituted of a mixture of two or more synthetic polymers. The fibres are bonded at their p points of contact by a bond constituted by at least one but not both or all of the polymers. The mat may also contain additional fibres of a single natural or synthetic polymer. The product may be made by forming a fibrous mat of the mixed-spun fibres, impregnating it with a solvent for at least one but not all of the polymers, and removing the solvent but allowing at least part of the dissolved polymer to remain to stick the fibres together. Suitable pairs of polymers are: polyamide and polystyrene; polyamide and polyolefine; polyvinyl chloride and polyacrylonitrile; polyester and polyamide; polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl chloride; and polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylonitrile. Mats of the mixed-spun fibres may be formed by a dry or wet process, e.g. by deposition from an aqueous slurry. The mat or article may be compressed, e.g. by passage between heated calander rolls, before or after the application of solvent. Removal of the solvent is effected by heating and or by washing. Suitable solvents include a methanol solution of calcium chloride, titanium tetrachloride or lithium chloride, various salt solutions, aromatic, cyclic ether, aliphatic hydrocarbon, ketone and cyclic ketone compounds or mixtures thereof. Included in the solvents there may be fillers, pigments, dyestuffs etc., dissolved or dispersed therein. A woven fabric of synthetic or natural fibre may be used as a central or base layer for the mat of fibres which is treated to form the artificial leather.
