In a circular machine having at least four feeds, sinker cams, radially mounted in a ring and movable during reciprocatory motion between two angularly-spaced positions, (during reciprocatory knitting) are rendered operative by a movable arcuate cam slide. The sinker cam ring 7 frictionally engages the sinker bed and is movable between the positions defined by the stops 9a, 9b and fixed shoulder 10. Arcuate slide 31 controls sinker cams 13a - f, except 13a, 13d which are controlled by slide 18 and firoted member 25 respectively. During rotary knitting cams a - d at feeds A - D are operative, as shown. During reciprocatory knitting while the cylinder rotates in the direction f1 only feeds B and C and sinker cams b and c are operative. During reverse rotation Fig. 7 (not shown) the ring is entrained until stop 9b abuts shoulder 10. Slide 31, which remains stationary renders sinker cams b, c inoperative and cams e and f operative so that yarn is taken by needles at positions E and F. The machine may knit at more than two feeds during reciprocatory knitting.
