Abstract

A rocket propellant comprises an extruded or cast and hardened body made from an inorganic and/or organic oxidant and a fuel component which consists wholly or partly of a silicone rubber polymer and/or a mixture of hardenable polysiloxanes. Suitable oxidants are alkali metal or ammonium perchlorates, nitrates, chlorates pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and trimethylenetrinitramine. The hardenable silicone may constitute the whole of the fuel, or it may be added in an amount of 0.05-2% by weight to act as a lubricant and/or plasticizer. Other optional ingredients are aluminium or aluminium-magnesium dust to raise the combustion temperature, and phenanthrene to raise the rate of combustion. The components may be mixed and cast in a vacuum, the mould being vibrated to produce dense castings. In Examples 1-4 propellants are prepared from ammonium perchlorate, aluminium dust, and methylpolysiloxane, with or without potassium perchlorate, graphite, and phenanthrene. Example 5 relates to a propellant containing ammonium perchlorate, sulphochlorinated polyethylene, an epoxide resin, 2-benzothiazol disulphide, dipentamethylene thiuram tetrasulphide, diorthotolylguanidine, aluminium, graphite, lead stearate, dibutyl phthalate, and a small amount of methylpolysiloxane.
