Abstract
1,060,870. Billet piercing; extruding. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Oct. 20, 1964 [Oct. 21, 1963], No. 42793/64. Headings B3H and B3P. In the extrusion of a solid billet into a tube 16 having a closed leading end whereby vacuum is created therein, the tube is pierced to relieve the vacuum. A heated solid billet 15 is placed in a container bore 14 and pierced by a mandrel 29. The billet is then extruded between the mandrel nose 31 and a die 27 to form the tube 16 whose closed bore produces a vacuum. To prevent collapse of the tube the wall is pierced at 41 by a bullet fired from a device 11 mounted in one of the die bolsters 19. The bullet is arrested in a bore 40. Device 11 may be fired manually or automatically by a solenoid 42, Fig. 3 (not shown), controlled by a switch actuated by the leading end of the extruded tube. The latter may be of non-circular section.
