Abstract
1352456 Extruding KOBE STEEL Ltd 19 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 53858/71 Heading B3P A tube extrusion press comprises a die 31, a ram 44, a billet container 37 and a mandrel 40 which is positioned inside the billet prior to extrusion and is fed through the die with the extruded metal so that there is no relative movement therebetween and no surface damage to the inside of the tube. The discard is cut from the extruded tube by a cutter punch 47 operated by a piston-cylinder unit 48, 49 in the movable crosshead 43 of the press. The mandrel is longer than the extruded tube, Fig. 7, and the assembly is water cooled and separated by a conventional mandrel stripper. The mandrel is recirculated and may be used as one of a set of mandrels in continuous use. The mandrel is fed into the billet through a bore 50 in the ram along rollers 53. The press is fluid operated and used in an installation with billet furnaces (7)-(11), Fig. 1 (not shown), cooling table (4) and a mandrel stripper (5). The container 37 may be adapted to move over the die, Fig. 3 (not shown).
