In a hopper and plunger type extrusion press for the manufacture of hexagonal or other multi-sided coal briquettes, and comprising a lower die piece 6, a pivotally mounted upper diepiece 5 capable of movement up and down, upper and lower die retaining members 8, 9, and a pivoted tongue 40 carrying the parts 5, 8, escape of noxious gases during extrusion is prevented by the provision of a sealing joint 35 between the upper part of the die and the filling shaft 23. The pressure within the die-channel is regulated by adjustment by a worm gearing of a screwed spindle 45 which bears against the tongue 40.
