Abstract

Mixtures of side chain chlorinated C1-C4 alkyl pyridines are prepared by treating a C1-C4 alkyl pyridine with atomic chlorine, or with chlorine in the presence of a free radical initiator containing an azo group, in a substantially anhydrous reaction medium comprising at least one mole of sulphuric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide, chlorosulphonic acid, pyrosulphuric acid, or a mixture of two or more such materials, per mole of C1-C4 alkyl pyridine. The atomic chlorine may be produced in situ by exposing the reaction mass into which chlorine gas is passed to actinic radiation, e.g. U.V. light, visible blue light or X-rays. It is preferred to effect the chlorination of the invention in the presence of a trichloride or pentachloride of phosphorus, arsenic or antimony.
