A machine for finishing the profile of shoe soles comprises a milling cutter 24, Fig. 5, guided by a roller 25 which slides on and is guided by the side of a template 12 of the finished sole. As described, soles (14, Fig. 1) are stacked in a magazine (15) and delivered singly by a feeder (50) actuated by a reciprocatory, hydraulic piston - andcylinder arrangement (56, 13) between an upper plate (31, Fig. 3) and the template (12), which are supported on shafts (22, 32), the latter shaft being movable axially by an hydraulic device. Each sole (14) is centred, prior to finishing, by pivoted grippers (16 . . . 19, Fig. 4) having rollers (20) and controlled by arms (34, 35) secured to an arm (33) operated by a two-way hydraulic device. An hydraulic cylinder and piston 29, 60, Fig. 5, via an arm 42 moves a support arm 23 for a motor 46 which belt-drives the cutter and coaxial follower roller 25 towards and away from the sole 14 at the start and finish of a trimming operation, and presses the cutter against the sole, and the roller 25 against the template 12. The depth of cut is adjustable by a screw 30. A further motor (62, Fig. 3) rotates the shaft (22) to which the upper plate (31) is secured, this rotation being imparted to the workpiece and the template (12) and its shaft (32). In order to effect an even feed of the workpiece to the cutter there is provided an arm 28 including a roller 51, which slides in a guide-way formed in a cam 11 coupled to the upper shaft (22) of the machine. The arm 28 is coupled to the arm 23 via arms 52, 55 and 44 so that the cutter 24 is moved in accordance with the movement of the roller 51. A punch (not shown) may be provided on the plate (31) or template 12 to produce a sole-size indication on the workpiece.
