Abstract

1,059,199. Gas turbine combustion chambers. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Oct. 20, 1965, No. 44503/65. Heading F1L. A gas turbine engine combustion chamber flame tube having a series of axially consecutive sections 20 with annular cooling air gaps 21 therebetween each containing a corrugated spacer 22 has a one piece part-spherical ceramic member 30 mounted in the upstream section 20 by means of expansion joints 31. The member 30 may be made of sintered silicon nitride and is not supplied with cooling air on its interior surface so that it is maintained very hot by the primary combustion occurring within it, thus promoting combustion. A fuel/primary air mixture is supplied through inlet 24 past swirler 25. Cooling air is supplied to upstream section 20 through apertures 32. In a modification, the downstream end of member 30 extends to the downstream end of the upstream section 20. The construction is applicable also to an annular flame tube.
