Abstract

1,059,040. I.C. engine cycles; cams. KLÍCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A. G. March 17, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 11195/64. Heading F1B. The valve gear of a supercharged air compressing four stroke I. C. engine is arranged so that exhaust gas can penetrate into the air inlet passage for a short time during the exhaust stroke thereby forming a protective layer over the inlet valve seats. When compared with the exhaust flow cross-section curve a, Fig. 1 of a conventional engine, the exhaust valve cam is arranged so that from crank position S 2 the curve a follows the dash line. The earlier closing of the exhaust valve causes the pressure in the cylinder to momentarily exceed the pressure in the inlet pipe, as inlet flow cross-section curve b increases, to permit the desired flow. The later complete closing of the exhaust valve at 59 permits the full scavenging of exhaust gas to take place. In modifications the exhaust valve may be completely closed before T. D. C. on the exhaust stroke, or the inlet valve may be opened for a short time immediately after the commencement of the exhaust stroke.
