Abstract
1,058,579. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 28, 1964 [Aug. 30, 1963], No. 35346/64. Heading H4A. A horn aerial of rectangular cross-section is made of east aluminium and has a closed end 31 from which a flared skirt portion 35 expands to an aperture 33, surrounded by a fixing flange 34. Radio frequency energy is fed by a coaxial cable 32 to a probe 36, projecting transversely through the skirt 35 near the end 31. Metal rods 40, 41 cross inside the horn between the probe 36 and the aperture 33 and are for suppressing modes higher than the fundamental so ensuring polarized radiation. Metal rods 49 crossing the aperture 33 and for a slot 48 in the flange are provided for reducing side lobes. The slot 48 is a quarter wavelength from the edge of the aperture 33 and is a quarter wavelength deep. In an alternative, a conical horn is provided with a crescent-shaped slot 48<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7 (not shown), in its fixing flange 34<SP>1</SP>. A radio altimeter may comprise two horn aerials of the kind described, which are mounted on a wing with their apertures pointing earthwards (Fig. 1, not shown).
