Abstract

1,057,781. Reelers; taking up slack in cables. G. HAWKES, and W. H. HAWKES, [trading as HAWKES BROS.]. Dec. 15, 1965 [Jan. 19, 1964], No. 2381/65. Headings B8B and B8M. A wire rope reeler of the type comprising an open-sided circular cage or drum mounted for rotation about its axis and a guide directing wire rope into and out of the open side whereby rope pushed into the cage rotates, the latter comprises a frame for securing the reeler to a pulling or hauling machine, a pivot carried by the frame for rotatably mounting the cage with the central opening alongisde the frame, and a guide, preferably a tube, carried by the frame. The cage preferably comprises two dished sheets, one having a central opening, joined at their peripheries, and the cage is preferably removable from the frame so that different quantities and types of wire rope may be supplied to the pulling machine. A support in the form of a ring may be provided for both the reeler and the hauling machine. A dip may be provided on the internal periphery of the drum for securing the end of the wire rope to the drum.
