A continuous rod machine for tobacco products comprises means for producing a continuous stream of tobacco, rod forming means to. enclose the tobacco stream in an outer wrapper while in continuous movement, a seam forming structure for. producing a lengthwise seam in the outer wrapper, means to shift a movable part of the seam forming. structure from an operative to an inoperative position, a main switch for starting and stopping the machine and means responsive to the operationof the main switch for effecting the shift movement of the movable part. The machine comprises a tobacco distributer 1 (Fig. 1), the tobacco being distributed on an endless belt 3 by a worm member 2. The belt 3 delivers the tobacco to a feed wheel disposed behind a cover 4 which delivers itin turn to rod forming and' wrapping- means; cigarette lengths being cut-off, by a cutting unit 5. The rod forming means comprises a gumming unit C, a seam-sealing unit D, and a rod breaking device E located before the cutting unit. 5. The main drive of the machine operates a tachometer which, when the machine has attained a. predetermined speed of operation, operates a relay controlling switches for operating units C andD and the device E, the unit D and the device E being operated through time delay devices. The seam-sealing unit D (Fig.. 4) comprises a heater bar movement of which against a seam of the wrapper is controlled by vertical movement of a rod 40. The rod rests on a cylinder 42 having an upstanding cam sector 43. Rotation of the cylinder 42 is controlled by a connecting bar 46 which is operated by an electromagnet 44. When the electromagnet is energized by the machine attaining the predetermined speed the cylinder is rotated in the direction of the arrow into the position shown, the rod 40 runs off the sector 43 and the heater bar is lowered into operative position against the wrapper seam. Return of the cylinder is effected by a spring 47. The rod breaking device E (Fig. 5) comprises a rod beater 58 which is mounted on the shaft of a gear wheel 57 forming part of a gear train mounted in a box 49 and culminating in a gear wheel 51. Rotatably mounted on the shaft of the gear wheel 51 is a ratchet wheel 62 connected to one end of an arm 52 the other endof which is connected to the piston of a hydraulic or compressed air cylinder 54. The cylinder 54 is controlled by a switch box 55 which, when the machine has attained its predetermined speed, causes the piston of a cylinder 54 to move in the direction of the arrow. During movement of the piston the ratchet engages a pawl 65 on the gear wheel 51 so that the beater 58 is rotated a number of times thus ensuring that initial faulty rod sections do not reach the cutter 5. The gumming unit C (Fig. 6) comprises a continuously rotating gumming wheel 27 to which gum is applied from a transfer wheel 22 rotated by a motor 23. An electromagnet 30 when energized moves a cleaning pad 28 out of contact with the wheel 27. The motor 23 and electromagnet 30 are energized when the machine attains the predtermined speed.
