Abstract

<PICT:1055929/C6-C7/1> A barrel, rotatable about its axis, for use in a barrel plating apparatus comprises end plates 2, 18 connected by a plurality of strut members 3a... 3f, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), about which extends a foraminous barrel wall formed of a non-conductive woven filament material, the barrel having an opening fitted with a cover member which is detachable for loading and unloading of the barrel. The barrel may be circular or polygonal. In the embodiment shown the barrel is carried upon support arms 10, 11 and is immersed wholly or partially in an electrolyte between soluble anodes 12, 13. Stationary cathode 23, 24 which are connected via insulated leads 25, 26 to the current source are positioned within the barrel, and the axle 21 of the barrel forms an anode which is protected from contact with the articles within the barrel by a non-conducting sectioned sheath 22, whose end sectors 29, 30 are secured to the end plates 2, 18, and rotate therewith, the axle and centre part 31 of the sheath remaining stationary. Rotation of the barrel may be produced by means of a belt drive, the end plate 2 acting as a pulley wheel; or by providing gear teeth upon the end plate 2 of the barrel.
