Abstract

934,850. Electrolytic rotary barrels. JACQUET - HISPANO SUIZA. June 17, 1960 [June 20, 1959], No. 21344/60. Class 41. Apparatus for the electrolytic polishing en masse of metallic articles such as screws, hooks and eyelets, comprises a rotatable barrel 1 to receive the articles 5 to be polished and an electrolyte, the barrel being formed of titanium, and an electric circuit in which the barrel is connected so that direct current is supplied to the articles forming the anode through contact with the barrel and from the articles to a cathode 2 immersed in the electrolyte but insulated from the barrel. The barrel, which may have a polygonal section with a charging door for opening 21a, is preferably perforated and at least partially immersed in a bath 13 containing the electrolyte, e.g. at level 14, by mounting it rotatably in bearings 10 and 11 in which rotates shaft portions 9 and 12 driven by wheel and worm 18 and 19. The cathode 2 is preferably of tubular copper and mounted coaxially in the barrel. The outside wall of the cathode may be crenelated and covered by a perforated insulating tube 3, e.g. made of the plastic " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark); parts 4, 6 and 7 are also insulating. Current densities of 20-40 amps/sq. dm. may be used.
