[Also in Division E2] A spring support which, within a certain range of movement of the supported load, acts as a constant support comprises a housing 10 for a spring 13 with an actuating rod 14 which projects through an end wall 1 of the housing which carries a pair of parallel plates, one shown at 16, between which is pivoted, at 18, a lever L consisting of a pair of L-shaped plates 25. Pins 37, carried by a block 36 on the end of the rod 14, pivotally engage in slots 31 in the lever plates 25 the radial distance of the pins 37 from the pivot 18 being adjustable by a screw 40 in a cross-plate 28. A load-carrying strap 47, carrying a connector 53 which is vertically adjustable through a screw 50 cooperating with a threaded web 49, is carried by a block 45 which is threaded on a screw 41 rotatably mounted in crossplates 26, 27, the distance between the pivot 18 and the block being adjustable by rotating a pulley 44 at one end of the screw 41. A roller carriage unit C is connected to a horizontal plate 17 welded between the plates 16. An indicator 34 on one plate 25 cooperates with a slot 21 in the adjacent plate 16 which is provides with an indicator scale 23. Fig. 3 (not shown). Latching means for releasably maintaining the lever L at a preselected angular position relative to plates 16 comprises a spring-loaded latching pin 65, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is reciprocably and rotatably mounted in a bracket 56 which is carried by one of the lever plates 25 and which projects through an arcuate slot 20 in the adjacent plate 15. The pin 65 can be engaged in the selected one of a series of arcuate holes 22 in the plate 15 and in a corresponding hole 35 in the lever plate, withdrawal of the pin from a corresponding pair of holes being effected by rotating the pin 65 through a pulley 71, or hand wheel 72, so that a projection 70 on the pin 65 rides up an arcuate cam surface 63 on a cam member 62 fixed to the bracket 56. In an alternative form of lever plate the screw adjustment 41 is replaced by a series of spaced openings in the plates 25 the load-carrying strap being pivotally connected to the selected pair of opposed openings in the plates. A vertically arranged spring unit is also described, Fig. 7 (not shown).
