Abstract
1,053,805. Metal carboxylates. CHEMISCHE WERKE MUNCHEN OTTO BARLOCHER G.m.b.H. April 4, 1964 [April 4, 1963], No. 13615/64. Heading C2C. Finely divided, dry or substantially dry, alkaline earth or heavy metal salts of carboxylic acids, which are admixed with a finely divided inorganic carrier, are made by heating a carboxylic acid with a finely divided oxide, hydroxide and/or carbonate of the metal in the presence of an excess by weight, with respect to the reactants, of a finely divided carrier material which is substantially inert under the reaction conditions. The reaction occurs in the absence of catalysts, but any residual moisture in the reactants or carrier may serve as a catalyst; no water is added to the reaction system. The reaction temperature is generally above the melting point of the acid and below that of the metal salts, but it may also be below both the melting point of the acid and the product salt. Suitable temperatures lie in the range 110-140‹ C. The inorganic carrier may be a carbonate; if the metal compound and acid react at a much faster rate than the carbonate carrier and acid, the carbonate carrier is not substantially attacked during the reaction period. Examples relate to mixtures of (1) zinc palmitate and kieselguhr, (2) calcium stearate and talcum, (3) monobasic lead stearate and chalk, (4) barium-cadmium stearate and chalk, (5) double basic lead stearate and mica and (6) lead phthalate and silica. Other specified acids are lauric, salicylic and fumaric acids.
