[Also in Division G1] A furnace 10 for use with apparatus for differential thermal analysis comprises two coil heaters 12 connected in parallel between watercooled leads 14, 15, surrounded by a ceramic cylinder 22 and a triple-walled molybdenum cylinder 23, and upper tungsten plates 20. The lower end of the heater wires is surrounded by quartz ring 32 to preclude arcing and a lower disc 33 of copper screens the bottom from the furnace heat. The assembly is enclosed in a water - cooled jacket 25, which together with a lid and base forms a vacuumtight assembly with a window 27 in the lid to enable the temperature of the test material to be determined by an optical pyrometer looking through a vertical series of holes 21 in the screening plates 20. The container for a test substance 53 has two chambers 57, 58 formed by rings 55 and plates 56 made of heat-insulating refractory oxides, symmetrically located in a thick tungsten block 5, so that the compartments are heated at equal rates. Each chamber has a crucible 59, the upper one containing the test substance 53. The space between each crucible and the refractory wall 55 is filled with tungsten resistance-thermometer wire 54. The assembly is screened by cylinder 30, and mounted on supports 28 inside the furnace 10.
