Abstract

[Also in Division B8] In a machine for packing tobacco into packets comprising means (not shown) for intermittently supplying measured portions of tobacco to a pressing chamber 1 in which it is compressed by a ram 8 prior to transfer to a package envelope (not shown), parts of the ram and chamber walls which are contacted by tobacco are provided with means 18, 24 . . . 27 to cool them during the pressing operation. As shown, the walls are hollow and provided with means for circulating a coolant such as brine. If the walls are cooled below the dew point the resulting film of moisture acts as a lubricant and prevents adhesion of tobacco thereto. The ram 8 compresses the tobacco against an end wall 6 and the compressed block is discharged into the package envelope by a ram 13.
