Abstract

1,210,308. Packaging cellulose acetate flakes/ baling press. CHEMCELL Ltd. 9 Aug., 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No. 38167/68. Heading B5F. [Also in Division B8] A cellulose acetate flakes package is in the form of a compressed bale having a density of from 30 to 40 pounds per cubic foot. To prepare the package, the flake which preferably has a moisture content of at least 4% is compressed to a density of 40 to 50 pounds per cubic foot, the bale held in the compressed state for at least 5 seconds and the pressure then released, after which the bale is inserted into a loose bag. The bale then expands to a " final " density of 30-40 pounds per cubic feet to fit the bag. The device for preparing the package has a compression chamber having a rectangular base and two fixed opposed walls, the other two opposed walls being provided by two reciprocable side rams. To prepare the package, flakes from a spout are introduced into the chamber and then compressed from the top by a compression ram to a specified limit. After at least 5 seconds, the compression ram and one side ram are withdrawn and then the other side ram acts as an ejection ram to push the bale into a bag. The corners of the bale may be chamfered or bevelled before the bale is put into the bag. The operation of the rams may be automatic.
