Abstract

1,052,098. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction switch fluids. G. N. J. MEAD. Aug. 13, 1964 [Sept. 4. 1963]. No. 32954/64. Heading H2A. An electromagnetic interaction pump has a tubular duct 12, of stainless steel lined with zirconia, surrounded by a number of electromagnets comprising winding 18 and yoke 20, each adjacent electromagnet producing an opposing longitudinal field in the duct. The electrodes comprise an electrically conductive strip 22 in the duct wall and a central rod 24 and these are joined by an insulated longitudinal spiral baffle 26 which defines axial passages for the fluid flow. Each baffle member is about the same length as an electromagnet and overlaps the co-operating electromagnet by half its length. Adjacent baffle members are wound in the opposite direction so that the currents flowing are alternately clockwise and counter-clockwise, and thereby pump the fluid along the duct. In n modification two concentric ducts may be used with a clockwise spiral baffle in the outer channel and an anticlockwise spiral in the inner one so that the fluid flow is opposite in the two channels. It is stated that this modification replaces the conventional electromagnets by the fluid ones in the outer channel, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). In a further modification, employing a similar duct construction to that shown, only with a single non-conductive spiral baffle extending the whole length of the generator. In this case both the supply electrodes are situated on the outer wall of the duct and are separated by the baffle, the central rod is used as a common electrode. In order to obtain spiral currents in the correct direction the electrodes are alternately masked with insulating material over part of this length.
