Abstract
Steel containing less than 0.40% of carbon, less than 1.5% of manganese, and at least one element selected from the group niobium, tantalum, and vanadium in a total amount of 0.02% to 0.20%, is given improved toughness by heating under such conditions that 30% to 80% of the latter element or elements is precipitated in acid insoluble form. Particular treatments disclosed are (a) treatment at 1100 DEG -1220 DEG C. for at least 15 minutes followed immediately by hot rolling finishing at 900 DEG C. (b) heating about 1250 DEG C., hot rolling, and reheating at 550 DEG -800 DEG C. for at least 15 minutes.
