Abstract

1,048,976. Very high pressure apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 26, 1963 [May 2, 1962; July 30, 1962], No. 25882/66. Heading B1X. In a very high pressure apparatus of the type in which oppositely disposed punches (15, 16) enter an annular member (11), (a) the ratio G/D of the gap G between the punches before the punches are moved inwardly to compress an object and the diameter D of the faces of the punches is less than 1.75, (b) the taper of the punches and annular member is such as to provide a space (12) converging inwardly which is filled by a correspondingly tapered gasket (19) which is coextensive with the tapered punch surface and (c) the slant length L of the gasket is such that L/G is greater than 1. As illustrated in Fig. 1, to which the numerals in brackets refer, the flat cylindrical object 20 to be compressed is surrounded by a spool shaped pryrophyllite sample holder 21 and is made up of three disc assemblies (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The upper and lower disc assemblies comprise larger segments 26, 28, of pyrophillite and smaller segments 27, 29 of graphite and the centre disc assembly comprises two pyrophyllite segments 30, 31, adjacent to a diametrical bar 32 of graphite to be converted to diamond, the arrangement being such that the graphite segments enable current to be conducted across the punches through the bar which is thereby heated. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a suitable electric circuit whereby heating may be accomplished in 0.001-0.004 seconds. A further arrangement of the sample is illustrated in Fig. 4, (not shown) where upper and lower graphite discs 34, 35 lie on opposite sides of a flat pyrophyllite cylinder 36 having a central aperture 37 containing the graphite charge 38.
