Abstract
The adherence of printing ink to a polythenecoated substrate is enhanced by heating the coated substrate immediately before or after printing to a temperature between 140 DEG F. and the temperature at which the surface of the polythene becomes tacky. In one example polythene is extruded at 600 DEG F. on to a sheet of paper. The coated sheet is then heated at 194 DEG F. for 30-60 seconds in an oven and immediately thereafter printed with a flexographic ink. In a further example polythene is extruded at 600 DEG F. on to a sheet of paper and then printed at room temperature. Immediately after printing the coated sheet is treated in a circulating air oven at 170 DEG F. for 15 secs. The coated substrate may contain additives such as an erucamide or a stearamide to reduce the time of heat treatment. The sheet is preferably heated within the range 175-240 DEG F. and the substrate may be kraft or bond paper, paper board, cloth, metal foil, glass fibre, cellophane or glassine. The heat may be applied alternatively by an infra-red hood heater or by steamheated rollers.ALSO:The adherence of printing ink to a polythene coated substrate is enhanced by heating the coated substrate immediately before or after printing to a temperature between 140 DEG F. and the temperature at which the surface of the polythene becomes tacky.
