Abstract
1,118,919. Forming skins on foamed thermoplastic articles; laminates. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 8 Dec., 1965 [12 Dec., 1964], No. 52121/65. Headings B5A and B5N. A smooth compact surface skin is given to a foamed thermoplastic article by intensively heating the article to render only its surface molten and subsequently smoothing the molten material after the escape of any gas from the interior of the article. In one embodiment a foamed sheet is passed through an infra-red oven and is then smoothed by a pair of compacting rolls. The foamed material may be, e.g. polystyrene modified with acrylonitrile and/or butadiene, modified polyvinylchloride, cellulose ester or polythene. If required outer sheets may be applied to one or both surfaces of the foamed sheet by applying the sheets to the still molten surface of the foamed sheet, the molten material acting as an adhesive. The outer sheets may be of "Duroplastic", wood veneer, metal foil, wire netting, glass fibre or P.V.C.
