Abstract
1, 046, 098. Oxygenating blood in an extracorporeal circuit. PRESNA MECHANIKA, NARODNY PODNIK. July 1, 1964 [July 3, 1963], No. 27133/64. Heading A5R. Apparatus for the extracorporeal circulation and oxygenation of blood comprises a compressed oxygen source 4, an oxygenator 5 supplied with oxygen from the source and two diaphragm pumps actuated by the oxygen under the control of a fourway valve 2 for drawing blood through the oxygenator and returning it to the body. Blood flows from the patient by gravity through a tube 9 into an oxygenator 5 wh ere oxygen from a source 4 is bubbled through it. Oxygenated blood passed from the lower part of the oxygenator 5 to a reservoir 10 from which it is drawn by two alternately operating diaphragm pumps 21, 22 and returned to the body through a tube 20. A partition on the oxygenator assists in removing oxygen bubbles from the outflowing blood, oxygen escaping through an opening 6. Each pump comprises a rigid case 11, 12 surrounding a flexible hose 14, 15 for the passage of blood, the case and hose being connected at their ends. The space between the case and the hose of each pump is connected via a four-way valve 2 with the oxygen source 4. The four-way valve which is connected to atmosphere through an outlet 3 is operated by a piston motor. The valve operates to supply oxygen alternately to each of the diaphragm pumps and connect each pump alternately to atmosphere.
