Abstract
1378701 Dialysis apparatus RHONE-POULENC SA 13 April 1972 [13 April 1971] 17190/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division A5] A pressure modulator for an artificial bloodcircuit comprises a resilient wall 2b, Figures 3, forming part of a blood chamber 2c having an inlet duct (17) Figure 4 (not shown) and an outlet duct (18), a pair of rigid plates one on either side of said chamber and forming part of an exchanger 2, at least one pulsation chamber 2a disposed on the side of one of said plates remote from said chamber, and fluid pulse producing means 7, 8, 10, Figure 1, connected to the pulsation chamber or chambers to cause flexing of the wall 26 and thereby pulsing of liquid in the blood chamber. A pump 1 feeds blood to exchanger 2, which may be in the form of a dialyser or diaphragm oxygenator, via an arterial inlet 12 to an organ 3 and along a venous outlet 13 to an inlet of the pump. A pressure gauge 4 connected across the exchanger 2 controls the flow rate of the pump 1. The pulsation chambers 2a are connected by means of a duct 14 to a fluid source 5, preferably air, under pressure and to a source 6 at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum. A three-way electromagnetic valve 10, which is controlled by contact pressure gauges 7, 8, switches connection of sources 5, 6 and the pulsation chamber 2a. Variable fluid resistances 9, 11 are provided between respective sources 5, 6 and the valve 10. Adjustment of the fluid flow through resistances 9, 11, or modification of the volume of the pulsating chamber, produces a pressure modulating effect on the walls 2b of the exchanger which in turn affects the volume of blood in chamber 2c. A blood pressure waveform is produced which approximates closely to the systoles and diastoles of a heart. A modified form of exchanger, Fig. 4, utilises non-return valves (15), (16) arranged in the respective ducts (17), (18) thus excluding the use of the pump.
