Abstract

N-Vinyl-a -pyrrolidone is produced by vinylating a -pyrrolidone with acetylene in the presence of a pyrrolidone alkali metal salt catalyst, preferably the potassium salt, at a pressure of up to 0.5 atmospheres in a gas liquid emulsion, preferably at a temperature of between 160 DEG and 190 DEG C., more particularly 170 DEG C., preferably in an autoclave containing a 2500-2800 r.p.m. agitator to create and maintain the gas liquid emulsion, and preferably with the acetylene being charged continuously and the a -pyrrolidone and catalyst charged discontinuously.
