[Also in Divisions B1, B2 and F1] A nozzle suitable for spraying foamed materials for combating fires comprises a discharge barrel 11, a chamber 24 separated by many times its own length from the barrel outlet and located between the barrel and a liquid supply pipe 41, a member 42 adapted to direct the liquid coaxially into a Venturi 43, air supply ports 44, 46 to said chamber designed so that air sucked through the ports by Venturi action is mixed with the liquid passing into the Venturi in proportion to the volume and velocity thereof, and pivoted valve members 47 arranged to open or close said ports. The barrel 11 is tortuous and includes a vertical swivel joint 16, a horizontal swivel joint 19 and sections 18, 21, 22 and 23 connected as shown in Fig. 1. The outlet of the barrel 11 is controlled by a toothed disc 48 eccentrically mounted on the barrel outlet and provided with a plurality of orifices 49 which differ in configuration. The disc is rotated to register the selected orifice by a motor 54 through gear means 53, the operation being remotely controlled by switch and detent means, Fig. 5 (not shown). The valves 47 are pivoted to the open position by the suction induced by the liquid flowing in the chamber 24. In the embodiment of Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the Venturi is in two relatively rotatable portions, the chamber is generally cylindrical, and the valve means controlling the air inlet is manually adjustable so that the discharge may be in the form of a continuous liquid stream if required. The nozzle may be used to spray a slurry, a mixture of liquids, or dry materials.
