Abstract

1,044,078. Propelling and steering wheel chairs. G. McLOUGHLIN & CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1965 [June 10, 1964], No. 21871/64. Heading B7E. The forward castor wheels and the footrest on a wheel chair are removed and a conversion unit comprising a pair of tubular side frames 14 is inserted into and clamped to tubes 11 and 12. The frames 14 carry end flanges 15, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and one of the flanges carries spring clips 27 releasably engageable by means of finger-pieces 31 with grooves 30 in dowels 23 fixed to the other flange and adapted to pass through a lug 20 integral with a steering head 21. The head mounts a wheel fork 33 and a tube 35 provided with plates 37 supporting a spindle 38 upon whose central part is rotatably mounted a T-piece 40 angularly positioned with respect to the plates 37 by a sleeve 52 mounting a pawl 53, Fig. 5 (not shown), and provided at its other end with hand cranks 42 driving the front wheels 34 through sprockets, jockey rollers 50 and chains.
