Jan. 8, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963; Jan. 19, 1963 (2); Jan. 26, 1963], No. 849/64. Heading F2E. An automatic adjusting device for the piston- and-cylinder mechanism of a fluid-pressure operated vehicle-brake comprises a friction element 6 engaging a part 5 secured to the cylinder 1 and itself engaged by an abutment member 11 movable with a piston 2 on application of the brake, but permitting the piston to move relatively to it in the opposite direction by an amount x corresponding to the desired brake clearance; the abutment agent being urged into engagement with the friction element by a spring 7 which also engages the friction element directly or through an intermediate member 9 to oppose movement of the member 11 in the brake-release direction. The invention is characterized in that a gasket 18 is interposed between the piston and the cylinder which is resiliently deformed upon supply of fluid to the cylinder 1 when the brake is applied and serves to move the piston away from the brake when the said fluid is removed on release of the brake. The fluid which acts upon the gasket 18 seeps between the piston 2 and the cylinder wall and on release it is the elastic movement of the gasket back to its original shape which moves the piston back through the distance x. Fig. 4 (not shown), illustrates an embodiment with the positions of the friction member and abutment reversed from those in Fig. 1 relative to the piston.
