Abstract

1,043,670. Energy-absorbing devices. VAN ZELM ASSOCIATES Inc. Aug. 27, 1965, No. 37034/65. Heading F2E. [Also in Divisions E1 and E2] An energy absorbing comprises an elongated metal element in the form of a coil 2 which is disposed within a housing 3, the housing comprising spaced plates between which there is a segmented spacer 7, 8 which surrounds the coiled element 2, one segment 7 of the spacer being secured rigidly to the plates and having one end formed with spaced, convex protuberances 10, and another segment 8 of the spacer being pivoted at one end 14 between the plates and being movable so as to permit the insertion of the coiled element 2 into the housing, the free end of the pivoted segment 8 being formed with similar convex protuberances which are spaced to interfit with the convex protuberances on the first-mentioned segment 7 such that when the pivoted segments are secured in place the free end 1 of the metal element extending from the coil is deformed in passing through the convex protuberances to dissipate kinetic energy. The metal element is provided with a solid metal lubricant such as a zinc coating bonded thereon. The energy absorbing device disclosed above may be applied to the ends of a chain link fence acting as a vehicle barrier in highway design.
