Abstract

1,097,699. Energy - absorbing devices. GROUPEMENT ATOMIQUE ALSACIENNE ATLANTIQUE. March 30, 1966 [April 16, 1965], No. 14140/66. Heading F2E. In an energy-absorbing device, a thin tube 10 which is gripped by a ring 13 attached to a bearing member 12 at one end is engaged by a bearing member 14 provided with a contact surface in the shape of a conical frustum 14a with a curved edge 14b such that when relative movement between the bearing members 12, 14 takes place, the tube is deformed into a coil 10b to dissipate the kinetic energy. An alternative embodiment is disclosed in the Specification (Fig. 1, not shown), wherein the tube folds up into a succession of parallel walls, one inside the other.
