Abstract

[Also in Division G4] In granule production, the sizes of sample granules are measured and the numbers falling in different size categories are counted and repeatedly compared with reference counts, the comparisons being utilized to control the size of granules being produced. Cement and water from sources 10 and 11 Fig. 1 (not shown) are supplied to an inclined, rotating, internally finned plate 1 so that granules are formed which are transmitted to a calcining kiln 4. A sample of the granules is by-passed to a measuring device 7 in which each granule obstructs the light to a number of photo-cells corresponding to its size. Four photo-cells are associated with logic circuits and counters so that counts are made of the numbers of granules in each of four size categories. These counts are stored and serve to control, periodically, the rate of supply of cement, water, speed and/or angle of the rotating plate to maintain an optimum size distribution of granules.
