Abstract
In a batch or continuous process and apparatus (see Division B1) two incompletely miscible liquids of different densities are contacted by forming an inverse dispersion of the greater volume phase liquid in the smaller volume phase liquid by a reciprocating or rotary agitator. Examples relate to the extraction of phosphoric acid, and the preparation of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, from a crude phosphoric acid aqueous solution and an aqueous ammonia solution respectively as small volume, continuous phase by water-containing n-butyl alcohol as larger volume discontinuous phase; the extraction efficiency is greater and settling rate faster than with normal dispersions.
