Abstract

Transfer tails are wound on the package supports 43, 44 Fig. 2, (not shown), by first guiding the yarns over auxiliary guides 8 that are normally in a first position near yarn snagging grooves 45, 46 in the package supports. When the yarns have been caused to snag in said grooves, by means of a hand tool 28, the auxiliary guides 8 can, in response to a signal, be caused to pivot to a second position where they transfer the yarn to self-threading traverse guides 62, 63 whereby to wind a transfer tail between each groove and the adjacent package area. As shown the running yarns are initially taken up by a suction device 41 but can be suitably spaced from each other by the guides 34, 35 on the hand tool. The hand tool is then moved towards the yarn snagging grooves in a manner causing the yarns to snag therein and break the yarn length between the grooves and the suction device By pressing a button 38 on the hand tool 2 a transmitter 27 sends a signal to a receiver 26 in a housing 3 carrying the auxiliary guides 8. The received signal is used to cause the auxiliary guides 8 to move from the first to the second position. The housing 3 is pivotable so that the guides 8 can be used in association with yarn winding means on the other side of the machine. The housing 3 is removable so that it can be used with any of the other and similar winding machines. In a modified construction Fig. 4 (not shown) the guides 34, 35 are bent wire formation and the hand tool is so shaped that it can be inserted into support and guide means to cause the guides 34, 35 to be accurately aligned with the snagging grooves 45, 46. In this construction the transmitter and receiver are absent and the housing 3 has manually operable means for causing the auxiliary guides to pivot. In a further modified construction the transmitter and receiver are replaced by a plug-in connection.
