A machine for spreading powdered material of the kind comprising a container 7 and an outlet port through which material is fed to a spreading member 11 is characterized in that the outlet port is formed in a portion 18 of the container which is rotatably adjustable by means of an adjusting mechanism and a shutter 49 is located close to the outlet port for opening or closing the outlet port, the shutter being rotatably adjustable by a control mechanism 53, the arrangement being such that operation of the adjusting mechanism to displace the outlet portion causes the control mechanism to move in conjunction with the adjusting mechanism whereby the controlled setting of the shutter relative to the outlet portion remains unchanged. As shown the portion 18 is connected by a link 25 with a casting 26 which is movable by a screw 30 operated by a handle 33. The control mechanism comprises a lever 54 mounted on the casting 26 and cooperating with a scale 56.
