Abstract
1,042,112. Ventilating cushions. S. P. CRANE. Jan. 5, 1965, No. 471/65. Heading A4M. A ventilating cushion 15 comprises a planar, one-piece web of synthetic plastics material formed with elongate, aligned ventilation apertures 20 and with arch-like elements 17-19 integral with the web to bridge the apertures 20 along their length, the tops 17 of the bridging elements forming a load bearing surface and the parallel strips 22 between aligned sets of apertures serving to stiffen the web. As shown, the elements 17-19 are formed by slitting 16, 16a an imperforate sheet and pressing out the portions between the slits. The elements 17-19 may, as shown, be formed alternately on opposite faces of the web with apertures 20 of adjacent rows in alignment. Alternatively the apertures 20 of adjacent rows may be staggered. The bridging elements 17-19 may all be formed on the same side of the web. The web may have an imperforate stiffening border which has a stiffened edge which may hold a reinforcing member. The cushion may be circular in plan view. Two cushions, Figs. 8, 12 (not shown), forming seat and backrest portions may be interconnected by flat blade springs 49 threaded through aligned edge apertures and the portions may be joined by an integral hinge 44. A non-slip strip 47 (Fig. 13, not shown), e.g. of rubber, may be woven through selected apertures.
