Abstract

1,042,148. Rod-breaking mechanisms. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and M. A. PYM. July 12, 1963 [July 13, 1962], No. 27040/62. Heading A2C. A rod-breaking mechanism in a continuous rod cigarette making machine comprises a guide element carried by arm 8 on shaft 9, having a part 5 with a guide surface 6 and a freely rototable roller 7 mounted on its -upper end, the guide element being positioned to intercept the rod C passing over the wheel 2 and divert the rod from its straight path along conveyer band 1, so that it does not enter rod receiving member 3. Gear segment 10 connected to shaft 9 intermeshes with gear segment 11 rotatable about shaft 12. By rotating segment 11 clockwise, segment 10 and shaft 9 are rotated anti-clockwise causing arm 8 to move the guide element into the position shown whereby rod C is engaged by roller 7 which presses the rod against band 1 causing a break B at a position on the top of wheel 2. A solenoid 14 which when energized causes gear segment 11 to rotate is arranged to be energized by movement of heater 13 (used to seal the overlapped edges of the paper web after application of adhesive) from a position away from the rod to its position adjacent the rod.
