Abstract
1,042,060. Opening containers. J. LYONS & CO. Ltd. Sept. 16, 1964 [Sept. 20. 1963], No. 37080/63. Heading B8D. A can, placed on a loading platform 2, operates a switch 21 to drive a pneumatic piston 10, thereby positioning the can below a piercer 5 which is automatically actuated to pierce both the top and bottom of the can. As the piston 10 advances, it engages a cam to actuate a main control valve. The valve causes clamping pistons (one shown at 14) to advance and hold the can on either side. Simultaneously, a piston device 3 drives the piercer 5 through the can and automatically withdraws the piercer. The liquid contents fall through a mesh screen into a trough 6. Emptied cans are pushed further along a guideway 1 until they fall into a discharge guide 12. A member 20 prevents the can from rising as the piercer withdraws.
