Abstract
An emulsifiable mixture comprises water, a substantially water-insoluble liquid hydrocarbon, and an organosiloxane-oxyalkylene block copolymer comprising (a) at least one block of at least 2 units of the formula RbSiO <FORM:1041341/C3/1> wherein R is a monovalent saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon (h.c.), halo-h.c. or divalent h.c. radical and b is 1, 2 or 3, the siloxane block containing at least one of the siloxane units in which at least one R is a divalent h.c. radical, and (b) at least one block containing at least 4 oxyalkylene radicals of the formula -R1O-, wherein R1 is an alkylene radical of 2 or 3 C atoms, the siloxane and oxyalkylene blocks being interconnected by the divalent h.c. radical and being present in amounts of 5 to 50 pts. (by wt.) of siloxane blocks and 50 to 95 pts. of oxy-alkylene blocks per 100 pts. of the copolymer. The siloxane blocks may also contain units of the formula <FORM:1041341/C3/2> , wherein e is 0, 1 or 2, f is 1 or 2 and the sum e+f is 1, 2 or 3. Hydrocarbons specified are pentane, hexane, heptane, pentadecane, pentylene, hexylene, heptylene, hexadecylene, pentyne, octyne, dodecyne, cyclopentane, cyclopeptane, cyclohexylene, cyclohexadiene, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, kerosene, diesel fuel and lubricating oils. The block copolymer is effectively used in amount of from 0.00001 to 75% by wt. of the total emulsifiable mixture. In a typical example (1) a mixture of a lubricating oil, a siloxane-oxyalkylene block copolymer, distilled water and di-2-ethylhexylsebacate (as viscosity reducer), was shaken by hand to yield a stable emulsion. Uses.-As lubricants for drawing and forming metal sheet cutting fluids and grinding fluids; and in cleaning and degreasing applications.
