Abstract

A process of oxidation of an aromatic, cycloaliphatic or olefinic hydrocarbon to give a phenol, alcohol or glycol respectively, or of an alcohol to give an aldehyde or ketone comprises contacting the hydrocarbon or the alcohol with a crude hydrogen peroxide solution produced by contacting hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of liquid water and an acid with a solid catalyst, the catalyst being capable of promoting the combination of hydrogen and oxygen to give hydrogen peroxide. The catalyst may, for example, comprise at least one element from Group Ib and/or Group VIII of the Periodic Table and a carrier. In a preferred embodiment of the process, hydrogen and oxygen are passed into an acidic water-containing liquid phase containing said catalyst and the organic compound which is to be oxidized. The decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide may be promoted by homogeneous catalysis or by radiation. Examples are given.
