1,040,536. Rolling. F. MOELLER and K. J. NEUMANN, [trading as VERWALTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT MOELLER UND NEUMANN OFFENE HANDELSGESELLSCHAFT.] Oct. 30, 1964 [Oct. 31, 1963], No. 44327/64. Heading B3M. In a ten-high rolling mill with alternative working rolls 1 and 15, for cold rolling or hot rolling strip respectively, intermediate, driven, backing rolls 2 and 3 are mounted in chocks 6 and 7 which are radially guided in bores 10 and 11 of backing roll shafts 4a and 5a. The shafts support backing rolls 19 (Fig. 2, not shown), for engagement with the rolls 2 and 3. Rockers 12 and 13, shrunk on to the shafts 4a and 5a and similarly formed with bores, are rotatable about roll axes 4b and 5b to vary the position of the rolls 2 and 3 so that they each lie on a line joining a work roll to a respective backing roll 4 or 5. This rotation is effected by cylinders 21 and 22 which slide within a fixed common cylinder 20 and embrace arms 12a and 13a of the rockers. Hand wheels 36 and 37 move the cylinders 21 and 22 axially, while a chamber 33 which is supplied with pressure fluid urges the cylinders apart and prevents backlash in the adjustment. The rolls 2 and 3 are additionally adjusted to lie slightly off the lines joining the roll centres in order to oppose forces due to strip tension and driving torque. Thus, for each reversal in a rolling programme the rolls 2 and 3 are adjusted to lie on the opposite sides of these lines. Pistons 23-26 within the cylinders 21 and 22 abut the arms 12a and 13a and are movable through a small distance 5 to effect this adjustment. Hydraulic conduits 28-31 supply fluid to opposite sides of the pistons 23-26.
