Abstract
Spheroidal graphite is produced in apparatus comprising a melting unit, one or more ladles, means for rotating a ladle rapidly in alternate directions, and an immersion bell for adding the spheroidizing agent. An oxygen lance may also be provided. In operation a ladle of iron is first desulphurized with reagents such as sodium carbonate or calcium carbide on the rotating device; after which slag is removed; the iron is then if necessary blown with oxygen to reduce its carbon content, after which spheroidizing additions are made. The iron may be centrifuged and allowed to decelerate slowly after desulphurizing and/or at the conclusion of the process, whereby effective degassing is obtained.
