Abstract
Substd. quinolones of formula (I) in which R3 is lower alkyl, R2 is H or lower alkyl, and R1 can be various radicals, and their acceptable salts, are made by (a) reaction of a quinolone (II) with an alkyl acid chloride or anhydride in an inert organic solvent in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst; (b) The cpd formed is reduced and (c) treated with strong mineral acid e.g. HCl or H2SO4; and (d) reacted with an epoxidising agent; and then (e) with an amine R3NH2, in a suitable solvent at 60-120 deg.C.
